Join our the FBB Board as a Trustee

Food Behind Bars is looking for a new trustee with recent experience as a prison governor, director, deputy governor or equivalent senior operational leader.

We believe food has the power to change lives. Through our work with prison kitchens and practical food education, we improve the lives of people eating prison food and support those making it.

As our work grows, we want to strengthen our Board with someone who understands how prisons operate, how decisions are made and what it takes to introduce and sustain meaningful change.

The role

Alongside your fellow trustees, you will help shape our strategy, oversee our progress and support and constructively challenge our Chief Executive.

Your particular contribution will be to bring a prison leadership perspective to our decisions. You will help us assess potential prison partnerships, understand the practical implications of our plans and identify what our programmes need to succeed. You will also act as a sounding board on working with prison leadership teams, navigating operational challenges and building support for improvements to food provision.

Your experience will help us reach more people while ensuring that changes can last beyond our direct involvement.

Who we’re looking for

First-hand experience of senior prison leadership is essential. We welcome applicants from publicly or privately managed prisons who bring:

  • A detailed understanding of prison operations, staff pressures and the needs of people in prison.

  • Experience of leading change, building staff support and working across departments.

  • Sound judgement, a collaborative approach and the confidence to offer constructive challenge.

  • A commitment to improving life in prison and an appreciation of food’s contribution to health, dignity, skills and rehabilitation.

Experience of overseeing catering, education, health or rehabilitation services would be valuable, but is not essential. You do not need previous trustee experience or specialist food knowledge.

Time and location

This is a voluntary, unpaid role involving four Board meetings a year, each lasting approximately two hours. Meetings take place in central London, with the option to join remotely. We also ask for occasional advice between meetings, agreed around your availability.

We welcome trustees based anywhere in the UK who can travel for agreed in-person commitments.

How to apply

Please send your CV and a covering letter to judy@foodbehindbars.co.uk, outlining your senior prison leadership experience, why you would like to join Food Behind Bars and what you would bring to our Board.
