Our Story So Far
Founded in 2016 as the UK's national campaign to improve prison food, Food Behind Bars became a registered charity in 2020. Since then, we've grown into the UK's leading organisation dedicated to transforming prison food. Today, we work with prisons across England and Wales, combining practical delivery, education and strategic support to improve food, health and wellbeing for thousands of people in custody.
While our work has grown significantly, our purpose remains the same: to unlock the full potential of food as a catalyst for healthier prisons, stronger communities and brighter futures.
Although we're a small team, our ambition is anything but. We work in partnership with prisons, charities, universities, government and the hospitality industry to create change at every level of the prison food system. Alongside our work in prisons, we continue to raise awareness of the importance of prison food through research, public speaking and national media. Our work has been featured by The Guardian, The Independent, The Telegraph, BBC Two, Metro and British Vogue, helping bring this often-overlooked subject into the national conversation.

“Over the course of an afternoon, I saw the work of Food Behind Bars. Under the supervision of FBB’s professional chef, prisoners employed in the staff bistro produced inventive food for the lunchtime service and then spent the afternoon experimenting with a new dish. One prisoner said that he understood the joy of making his own food for the first time, having survived on takeaways when he was outside, and he was looking forward to cooking for his family and friends on release.”
